Monterey Bay on PBS Tonight

Big Blue Live celebrates a wildlife success story and marine animal phenomenon: humpback whales, blue whales, sea lions, elephant seals, sea otters, great white sharks and more all convene in Monterey Bay once a year.

PBS and the BBC team up for this live three-night event, direct from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in California. For an hour each night, Big Blue will gather scientists, filmmakers, photographers and marine animal experts, all for one purpose: to film and greet the marine creatures who either live in or return to the bay every year.

Massive Anchovie Die Off At Beach

Hi Neighbors.

For an unknown reason, a large number of anchovies has come into the harbor. This is most likely due to the above average water temperatures off the California coast which is great for anchovies. This creates a risk of a die-off due to reduced oxygen levels in the water though. The city has aerators working that should help prevent that, but it is very possible that tomorrow we could be faced with a large number of floating dead fish (if the aerators weren’t adequate). In the past the city has found people to help with the cleanup. If anyone is interested in volunteering in the event we are faced with this issue please message me and I will get your name on a list of people that can be notified.

Here’s a news clip of this same issue from past years:

Monterey Police Department on Nextdoor

Hi Neighbors,

I was recently informed that the Monterey Police Department has shown interest in using Nextdoor to provide alerts, news, and other notifications in our area. Monterey Police Department staff will only be able to see replies to their own posts, and they will NOT be able to view any other content in Nextdoor DMBN.

We have been working with the Monterey Police Department and the NPS Police to help curb issues in our neighborhood, increase patrols and crime awareness. If you need to contact Monterey PD dispatch call: 831-646-3830. For emergencies dial 911. For more information about the NPS police follow this link: http://www.nps.edu/Adminsrv/police/

Monterey Launches New Citizen Feedback Site

The city of Monterey started promoting its “mysidewalk” site today, when it fired off a tweet and asked people to check it out www.monterey.mysidewalk.com.

The site is another in a list of online tools the city is trying out as a way to get feedback from people.

“It’s really about convenience and it’s about connecting with the community,” said Anne McGrath in the communications office at the city of Monterey.

The site allows visitors to rate postings on current city projects and leave their feedback in comment sections. Right now the site is packed with posts and polls on Measure P work, so the city can get an idea what neighbors think about the work being done on their streets.

The city has already embraced social media… with an active presence on facebook and twitter… and they’re hoping mysidewalk get the same level of community interaction….

“We can have tools, we can try to engage people but if people don’t want to engage on that tool then you know it’s not helpful to us,” said McGrath.

McGrath said if people do seem to be engaged on mysidewalk the city will continue to use the site and expand the feedback topics.

Happening Now

Another “Transient” Fire by Del Monte Beach. This is the largest one we’ve had in a while. Fortunately Monterey Fire and PD were on the scene with the NSA Police in a matter of minutes. Please keep an eye out as these fires will spread quickly with the ongoing drought.

Porta-Potty Controversy

What are your thoughts?

http://www.ksbw.com/news/monterey-portapotty-controversy/34171036

This has been a controversial issue for some time. Many neighbors and Monterey residents proposed that our neighborhood, which has access to a public beach, should have restroom facilities. This was initially spurred by many of our neighbors having complaints about visitors using their yards and other public places as restroom facilities because none were provided. The Tot Lot on Spray Ave continues to have problems with some parents allowing their children to do their business in the bushes, regularly destroying the landscaping and making an unsanitary environment for others. Many long-time residents have asked for a bathroom here as well.

A recent NIP project was approved to conceal the portable toilets at a cost of $16,000. Some neighbors and residents would like to see a permanent bathroom in place, others would like to see toilets completely removed. There are many valid points on both sides.

CERT Radio Drill Tonight!

Tonight at 8:00 PM we’ll have our neighborhood emergency response container open to conduct radio checks with all of the emergency response teams around the Monterey Peninsula. We’ll be broadcasting from our container in the Tot Lot on Spray Ave.

Monterey has three FCC-licensed frequencies that are dedicated to our emergency response communications. If you would like to participate please send me a message as I have a few extra radios. These are part of the City’s Community Emergency Response Team. If you would like to purchase your own radio to have and to monitor, to stay prepared and participate at any time, these are the radios we are using: Wouxun KG-UV3D Dual Band 128 Channel Handheld Amateur Radio: http://www.powerwerx.com/two-way-radios/
