This is Tsunami Preparedness Week. Tomorrow, March 25, at 10:00 AM the Naval Postgraduate School will be sounding their Tsunami alarm to test their system. If you live close to NPS you may be able to hear it.
Tsunamis are among Earth’s rarest hazards. But, even though tsunamis do not occur very often, and most are small and nondestructive, they pose a major threat to coastal communities, particularly in the Pacific. A tsunami can strike any ocean coast at any time. There is no season for tsunamis. We cannot predict where, when or how destructive the next tsunami will be. However, while tsunamis cannot be prevented, there are things you can do before, during and after a tsunami that could save your life and the lives of your family and friends. Read these pages at the following link to learn about tsunamis and what you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe in the event of a tsunami.

Tonight we will be conducting the City’s first monthly radio drill from our Emergency Response Container at the Tot Lot on Spray Avenue.
Stop by and see us or check in on the air from home or an evening walk on the beach. Our emergency container recently had solar panels installed and we now have a base radio that can be used as a relay station for most of the Monterey Peninsula.
Del Monte Beach is the selected location for a radio relay point if there is a coastal incident.
Show some pride in you neighborhood and check in. Monday at 8pm on CERT channel #3.
In a real disaster emergency teams will check in at our neighborhood container with radio reports.
In a real disaster the Neighborhood Captain would be the one to contact the City’s Emergency Operations Center long distance with a base radio on Channel #3 with critical information. You will be dependent on your neighborhood container for information.
I hope to see you on the radio tomorrow night after dinner at 8pm.
Our shores are constantly being altered by human and natural processes and projections indicate that sea level rise will exacerbate these changes. King Tides images offer a living record of the changes to our coasts and shorelines and a glimpse of what our daily tides may look like in the future as a result of sea level rise.
Here are the dates for our next California King Tides at our doorsteps:
Date and Time King Tide
January 19, 9:19am 6.61 ft
January 20, 10:06am 6.68 ft
January 21, 10:54am 6.54 ft
February 17, 9:07am 6.41 ft
February 18, 9:58am 6.45 ft
February 19, 10:49am 6.28 ft
The next CERT training takes place over 7 consecutive Thursday nights starting March 5, 2015. Class time each evening is 6:30-9:30.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist their families and others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
Learn These Skills and Many More:
Emergency First-aid
Use of a fire extinguisher
Disaster Preparedness
Shutting your utilities
Rescue
Communications when cell and home phones fail
Assessing your home or workplace after an earthquake or storm
All classes are taught in Monterey. Anyone may enroll by sending an e-mail of interest to: [email protected]. Persons without e-mail can leave a phone message at (831) 646-3416. You will receive a confirmation.
This class provides 24 hours of public service credit to High School Students!

This 70 lb, 8 month old puppy just went missing on the beach. He answers to “Collie.” He is white with black spots and is wearing a red harness and is dragging a blue, retractable leash. If found please call Stephanie at 714-336-5869.
